This chapter describes Ricci's hectic routine in Beijing in the last years of his life, the Jesuit community and church, Ricci's relationship with his fellow missionaries, especially with Pantoja. It also narrates the attempt by the Portuguese Jesuit to reach China from India via the Silk Route and the Jesuit Niccolo Longobardo's persecutions in Shaozhou. Ricci's attacks on Buddhism provoked a spirited defence from Yu Chunxi. The two men's letters, never translated in full before, are presented here. This chapter ends with Ricci's nostalgia, his memoirs, illness, and death.
