This introductory chapter begins by briefly setting out the focus of the book, namely the uses of brain imaging technologies that throw light on our mental capacities, states, and acts. In this sense, the focus is on a subset of brain imaging research. However, the neuroscientific advances that relate specifically to the mind have provoked excitement and discussion in the many disciplines to which they are relevant, extending far beyond the bounds of medicine. An overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.
