Chapter 1 presents the main arguments of the book, its main concepts and aims, as well as the method followed and the sources used. This chapter defines in broad terms the rights-based approach to participation and presents the basic premises of the concept of participation endorsed in the book, which is developed in Chapter 2. It also explains why the book's propositions are congruous with the specific features of the EU legal system. Furthermore, this chapter singles out the contribution of the book to the existing literature on participation in the EU.
