The paper reassesses two central issues involving intransitive emission verbs, namely their unergativity and their transitivity alternations. Contra Reinhart 2002, the paper argues that emission verbs involve a causal implication, hence their subject merges externally without further ado. The transitive alternate is motivated by a non-derivational but productive pattern.
