Blake says he has chosen the words of his poem to suit the mouth of ‘a true Orator’ Jerusalem is designed to be read aloud. Reading aloud not only illuminates how characters can be portrayed, it reveals that the text can be broken into dramatic vignettes or scenes. Part II's scene‐by‐scene commentary is based, not only upon the work of many fine scholars, but also upon the experience of reading, hearing, and performing Jerusalem. Particular attention is paid to the dynamics of forgiveness and the relationship between the human and the divine in the poem's montage of overlapping stories.
