This introductory chapter maps the field studied. It looks critically at the current state of scholarship on national laws on religion in the States of Europe, with particular reference to those of the European Union. It compares in outline the historical position of religion in these States (including the prevalence of Catholicism, the influence of the Reformation, the place of religion in former-communist countries, and the rise of religious pluralism). It also deals with the religious demography of the States today.
