The chapter builds upon the previous surveys of the five federal theorists by taking from their work those aspects that can be utilised for the purpose of constructing a new set of conditions or preconditions for successful federal state formation. This selective analytical exercise is conducted to achieve a theoretical pluralism to replace individual approaches and in this quest it sets out the intellectual background by anchoring the subject in its appropriate theoretical context. Recurring themes are detected that enable us to identify both the conditions of success and those of failure which correspond to the presence or absence of the federal spirit. These are placed in the context of contemporary theoretical developments to provide a preliminary clarification of the factors deemed necessary to lead to a comprehensive framework of analysis. This is outlined in the conclusion.
