This chapter places the Dictionary in its historical context, showing how Jamieson drew on a number of separate traditions, both in Scottish and English lexicography. It discusses earlier Scots glossaries, especially that of Thomas Ruddiman, showing how Jamieson used them as key sources and models for the Dictionary. The chapter also outlines previous plans to compile a Scots dictionary, and shows that Jamieson’s was one of a number of rival dictionary projects at the turn of the century.
