This chapter outlines and evaluates a range of perspectives within anthropology and sociology regarding ethnicity. First, the principal concerns about the debate will be addressed such as defining ethnicity, understanding the significance of core and periphery debates and the relevance of race and nationalism to ethnic identities. Within the second part of the chapter, material concerning ethnicity has been selected according to its relevance for coming terms with Ezra 9–10. Therefore, the issues which are explored in detail are the relationship between migrations and ethnicity, the significance of history and religion to ethnicity, and the dynamics of the association between ethnicity and intermarriage.
