This chapter describes the role of energy networks in facilitating the production and use of renewable energy sources, and in particular the regulation of the Directive 2009/28/EC of the European Parliament and the Council of 23 April 2009 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources. There is a close functional connection between generating installations, networks, and consumer installations. However, the main focus is on the networks, which are the physical frame of the electricity market. Norway is used as an example. The Norwegian market system for renewable energy is discussed, focusing on hydropower.
