This chapter gives an overview of Marías's life and career, with a particular emphasis on his work as a translator. His upbringing and early years are looked at in detail to explore the environment in which he grew up and what the likely influential factors were which shaped the writer he became. These (obviously) included his parents, the philosopher Julián Marías and his mother Dolores Franco, his uncle, the film director Jesús Franco, and his early mentor, the novelist Juan Benet. This chapter also offers a detailed biographical and bibliographical breakdown of what, where, and when Marías did his translation work. Here also his accession to the throne of the Realm of Redonda is described, particularly as it pertains to the publishing venture the Reino de Redonda press.
