In the 1937 volume of the Revue de philologie de littérature et d'histoire anciennes, Jeanne Vanseveren (i.e., Jeanne Robert) published amongst other inscriptions a decree from Chios of the late third-early second century bc. The decree concerns an arbitration between the city of Parion and the Lampsacenes. Upon autopsy, this chapter revisits the text offering new readings and a new commentary that is supported by numerous epigraphical parallels. This allows the text to probe into the semantics of various key terms, to explore technical aspects of the process of σύλλυσις and the meaning of the enigmatic trials, and to examine the officials involved (e.g., ambassadors, prytanis stephanephoros, etc.) and the religious rituals that accompanied the whole process.

Keywords: ambassadors; arbitration; Chios; decree; Lampsakos; Parion; religious rituals; prytanis stephanephoros; σύλλυσις; trials
