General number and the structure of DP*

This chapter addresses the issue of general number: nominal forms that are underspecified for number. Drawing on data from Malagasy and a range of other languages, it is shown that general number does not correlate with other semantic properties of DPs, such as narrow scope. Thus there is no one-to-one mapping between morphosyntactic form and meaning.

Keywords: general number; scope; bare nominals; Malagasy
