This chapter offers a theoretical and practical framework for understanding the usability of free Internet dictionaries for teaching and learning Business English. The analysis, which is based on the tenets of the function theory of lexicography, and consequently elaborates on the extra-lexicographical social situation identified as teaching and learning Business English, focuses on a list of features that make these well-known web-based training systems usable and appropriate for overcoming material restrictions and for constant retraining in the field of ESP. The analysis also compares the information data found in free Internet dictionaries and in well-known printed Business English dictionaries, and concludes by recommending a blueprint that might be used for eliminating the suspicion teachers might have regarding their use in a pedagogical context. This blueprint, which has been put into practice in a Spanish university context, aims at increasing the dictionary culture of potential users of free Internet dictionaries, and signals some of their defects and ways to overcome them.
