Chapter 1 introduces the Kayardild language, its speakers and the empirical sources used in the book, including the Author's fieldwork and that of others since the 1960s. Novel contributions of the book are summarized. An outline is given of the structure of the grammar which will be argued for, including the notion of a morphomic level of morphological representation. The domain of enquiry is delimited and some extensions and implications of the current work are mentioned which for reasons of space or clarity do not appear in the book.
