This chapter considers briefly some of the topics to which HIA has been applied although each topic would merit a book in its own right. There have been many HIAs of transport where impacts of emissions, noise, injuries and severance have to be considered. For airports the main issues are noise, emissions and surface transport. Poor housing damages health and housing projects have important health impacts. All methods of power generation have positive and negative impacts thought these vary depending on the method. Extractive industries have important impacts and may involve major population displacement. Dams and water projects can also involve displacement and changed water flows are often accompanied by changed distribution of disease vectors. There are several methods of waste disposal and all have negative impacts. Health service projects can also benefit from health impact assessment.
