Modern scholarship, unlike early Jewish readings, has found Ecclesiastes uninterested in history. This study suggests that the book is haunted by Israel’s history, especially the exile, in a range of modes from allusion to echo, considered against the framework of models of intertextuality offered by Hays, Fishbane, Hinds and Hollander.
