In the mental file framework identity comes into the picture twice. (i) Identity is presupposed when two pieces of information occur in the same file. (ii) Judgements of identity work by linking two distinct files, thereby enabling information to flow freely between them. Linking is distinguished from merging. Strawson's theory of files is discussed, and the special case in which the information stored in a file is relational information is considered.
