The Dynamics of Files

Show Summary Details

Papineau's critique of the analogy between perceptual concepts and indexicals is discussed. The accumulation of information across encounters with an object does not establish that a single file persists through changes in the subject's contextual relations to the referent. It is shown that, by appealing to the mechanism of ‘conversion’, one can account for the preservation of information across files within the indexical model.
