Linking between indexed files and regular files is shown to work differently from linking as it operates between regular files. Various phenomena involving indexed files are discussed, including thoughts/utterances that are not metarepresentational at the level of truth-conditional content. It is argued that indexed files are a simulative device, reminiscent of the echoic use of words in open quotation.
