This chapter discusses Article 1 of the 1926 Slavery Convention in order to address the doubt surrounding the interpretation the provisions of slavery. It explains the guiding idea that slavery is both identified and constituted by the exercise of ‘the powers attaching to the right of ownership’. It discusses in detail the different powers and privileges that are connected to ownership, and then looks at their use in situations of slavery.
