Jean and the author were met by Ulrich who took us to a flat in Schwetzingen where they lived for the whole of their stay in Germany. Häberlen worked at the Max Plank Instititute for Medical Research situated on the river Neckar. Schwetzingen lies 9 km from Heidelberg. They were housed in a small apartment block on Antoni Straβe. Their two children, Sarah 5 and Gillian 3 were settled in a local schools, Sarah in the Zeyer Grund Schule and Gillian in a local catholic kindergarten. Sarah settled in well but Gillian did not like the look of the Nuns and thought they were witches. He joined the Physics group led by Professor Hauser in which Häberlen was a Senior Assistant. He worked with Ulrich on an improved method of multi-pulse line narrowing in solids which led to a paper published in English in the German Journal ‘die Zeit’. He also corresponded, covertly with Peter Grannel on imaging. In order to socialise with his German colleagues, they invited them to a party in Schwetzingen. He later decided that he wanted all to converse with him in German rather than English which was the common language in the lab. He decided to give a talk on other work in progress in Nottingham on double-resonance. Dr Hermann Brunner was extremely helpful in encouraging him to speak German. He had the basics at school but Hermann’s help was invaluable. The talk went reasonably well so that after the talk most people spoke to him in German. During their stay in Heidelberg, Jean and the author made several tours to East Germany, Poland and Hungary, meeting old friends and colleagues. They also had English and American colleagues visit as well as family and their mothers too. They finally left Heidelberg on 17 August 1973.
