The chapter deals with the following aspects of the Cold War and its legacy: different interpretations of the nature of the Cold War at the current stage of research, the “side effects” of the superpower competition on Soviet and U.S. domestic and foreign policies, and continuity and change in Russian and American foreign policies since the end of the Cold War. One of the conclusions is that the U.S, strategy has changed much less than the Russian one, though the latter too retains some elements of continuity with the Cold War.
