This introductory chapter begins with a very brief background to the study of strong experiences with music (SEM) that is presented in this book. The strongest driving forces behind the study have been a general dissatisfaction with the state of research, and the hope of being able to reach greater clarity as to what musical experiences can mean. It then reviews some previous studies on SEM and presents the distinction between how people perceive music and how they react to it. An overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.
