This chapter presents an autobiographical survey of Carl Stumpf's life and work. It was written shortly after he retired from all lecturing at Berlin University in 1923. The first part is autobiographical, the second is a summary of the different threads — from academic philosophy to mathematics and the natural sciences — that are interwoven in his various publications to form the dense wood of his interdisciplinary legacy. The text is given here in a new translation as a short introduction to the author's scientific convictions, and to his motivation for investigating music as a means of understanding the psychological functions of our intellect.
