This chapter starts by considering the public/private dichotomy in representing the information states of conversational participants. Following that, the components of the public part of information states that figure in the account of interaction are developed. In particular, rules for greeting, parting, querying, and assertion in dialogue are proposed. The chapter concludes by considering how genre specific aspects of conversation fit in to the emerging picture of interaction.
