Show Summary Details

This chapter establishes the theoretical framework of the study, providing an introduction to the core ideas from linguistics and psychoanalysis that have a bearing upon the notion of identity in Sereni’s oeuvre. A preliminary section discusses changing critical approaches to an analysis of subjectivity in the lyric text, before moving on to analyse Sereni’s own particular configuration of subjectivity in the poem. Identifying a crucial nexus in his poetry between subjectivity, language, and desire, an initial link is drawn between Sereni’s subject at loss in the world of the poem, and the model of the speaking and desiring subject put forward by Jacques Lacan and Julia Kristeva, developed in subsequent chapters.
