Beyond discussion of basics (date of the work, the original ordering of Seneca's books, their place in the ancient meteorological tradition), this chapter distinguishes the approach to Seneca's Natural Questions that is taken in this book from other approaches in earlier scholarship. Particular emphasis is placed on Seneca's cultivation of a hybrid physico-ethical mode of discourse in which the study of the physical world is made inseparable from study of human behaviour. The introduction ends with a survey of the chapters to follow.
