This introductory chapter begins with a discussion of developments that have contributed to the placement of the Islamic question (the concern of various national and international actors to domesticate Islam) at the center of international affairs. It then sets out the focus of the book: the role played by religion in general and Islam in particular in Senegalese immigrant transnationalism. This is followed by a discussion of the sources, research methods, and limitations of the study. An overview of the subsequent chapters is presented.
