Following the overview of sound in prayerbooks offered in Chapter Six, this chapter offers a close reading of two prayerbooks: the Hours of Jeanne d’Evreux and Walters 102. It shows how the visual and verbal programs of these books offer lessons on the perils and virtues of sound in prayer, with particular emphasis on the problems associated with verbal confusion and distraction. The readings demonstrate how meanings are made in these books via a kind of polyphony of texts and images, and proposes an affinity in between praying and listening to polyphony
