This chapter examines the evidence for the effectiveness of the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model, summarizing four lines of research: firstly, a group of quasiexperimental studies of programs converting their services from day treatment to IPS; secondly, sixteen randomized controlled trials comparing IPS to alternative vocational programs; thirdly, a detailed analysis of a combined data set from four randomized controlled trials examining a comprehensive set of competitive employment measures; and, finally, long-term follow-up studies of IPS, including two with a follow-up period of eight years or more.
