Show Summary Details

This chapter looks at the fundamental role of technology in the representation of mariachi and its acceptance among Mexican-American communities in the borderlands as a symbol of cultural identification. Based on both ethnographic and archival research, this chapter shows how mariachi transcends the borders between highbrow and lowbrow art, folk and elite culture, and popular and classical music, thus providing Mexican-Americans with a transnational, trans-border space of identification that intersects tradition and innovation.
