Chapter 7 describes the history of Nîmes during the First and Second Wars of Religion, focusing on the Michelade, one of two massacres of Nîmes Catholics. It argues that, despite the arguments of Natalie Z. Davis and Denis Crouzet, Protestants in power were just as prone to massacre as Catholics were; that there were fewer Protestant massacres than Catholic ones merely shows that Catholics were usually in the majority. The chapter also analyzes the symbolic violence committed by Nîmes’s Protestants.
