The chapter offers details on the stratification criteria used to gather the sample of 140 consultants and its balance in terms of gender, national origin, areal origin, age of arrival, years spent in New York, social class, years of education, English skills, and amount of use of Spanish. Cross‐stratification is described. A distinction is made between a priori recruiting categories and the categories used later for analysis. The chapter gives detailed demographic information on the project's consultants and stresses the presence of second‐generation Latinos in the sample. The chapter describes the interview methods and the precise way in which transcriptions were carried out, including transcription conventions. The three‐file method for storing the transcripts is described and illustrated with examples from the project's transcripts.
