Secularism is on the rise in America. Surveys from the past 20 years show that more and more people are rejecting their religion. In fact, back in 1990, only 8% of Americans said they had no religion—today, it is over 16%. This chapter presents the term apostasy, defines it, describes various forms and types of apostasy, and briefly reviews previous studies from the past 50 years on apostasy in America. It also presents the research method for the book, the sample size, and sample population. And it introduces us to one apostate, Nathan, and his interesting journey from religious believer to secular atheist.
