Based on extensive in-depth interviews, this chapter presents life-story portraits of two apostates, Robert and Ed. Both raised in a strong, Evangelical, fundamentalist Christian home, these two brothers were extremely religious for most of their lives. They were active in Christian activities and movements, and they were convinced believers. Today, they are non-Christian. They no longer believe. What happened? What caused them to lose their faith? Various sources of their apostasy are explored, and this chapter basically sets the tone for the rest of the book, as many of the key aspects of Robert's and Ed's rejection of religion are echoed and further analyzed in subsequent chapters.
