Many Americans see nonreligious people as suspect: they are considered to be immoral and generally of bad character. This chapter, based on interviews with many apostates from various religions and walks of life, counters the negative stereotyping of the nonreligious. The worldviews of apostates are explored and analyzed—their morals, their values, how they feel about death and the meaning of life, the things they have lost by rejecting religion, and all that they have gained.
