Based on an analysis of the family backgrounds and parental religiosity of those interviewed for this book, a strong case is presented that parents play a large role in influencing subsequent apostasy. Extensive research on religious socialization is presented, and it is shown how it accords with secular socialization as well. Personal life stories reveal the actual ways in which parents can influence people's rejection of religion, in both subtle and overt ways. Additionally, apostates discuss personal challenges as they raise their own children.
