This chapter offers a brief history of La Monte Young’s and Marian Zazeela’s Dream House concept: a sound and light environment created by careful manipulation of colored lights, shadows, and symmetrical forms, and carefully tuned, sustained frequencies with specific intervallic relationships. It provides an account of the incarnation of the Dream House funded by Dia Art Foundation from 1979 until the mid 1980s, and also gives a detailed ethnographic account of the author’s experiences spending time in the version of the Dream House that opened at 275 Church Street in Manhattan in 1993. The author visited the Dream House on several occasions, and also trained with Young in order to serve as a monitor for the Dream House’s operation. This account also includes a detailed exegesis of the acoustical principles behind the Dream House’s unique array of frequencies.
