The chapter sets out the scope of the book and outlines its methodological orientation. It argues that studying language in the social world from a symbolic and quantitative perspective places it at the crossroad of many disciplines and fields of study. This duality of perspectives is used to highlight the political nature of language in society at times of conflict at the individual, Self, and group level. The chapter further argues for expanding the kind of data used in sociolinguistic research on Arabic to include autoethnography, autobiography, semi-autobiography, literary production and web-based materials.
