Chapter 7 explores the empirical data on identity strategies of engagement. The chapter begins with a short elaboration of engagement and its general characteristics. It returns briefly to the themes of dialogue, recognition, deep multiculturalism, and cosmopolitics. The chapter then considers in turn: France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, and Canada, each discussed in the context of evidence of strategies of engagement among both Muslim minority and majority populations. Among other considerations, the chapter pays attention to gender and the politics of engagement, the role of young Muslims in animating a politics of engagement, and the psychodynamics of identity as agents conceive of themselves as part of an increasingly encompassing world. The chapter recalls the importance of structural change, of contact, of daily encounters, of dialogue, and of community relations in the construction of good-enough political societies.
