The Pan family moves to Hollywood where Hermes and Vasso discover that securing work in musical films is more difficult than they had imagined. Hermes acquires a variety of odd jobs before taking a position with Cushman’s Garden of Glorious Girls, a tab show, touring around the West Coast. He lands a choreographic assignment with the Nine O’Clock Revue that leads to his being hired at RKO as Dave Gould’s assistant on a film called Flying Down to Rio where he choreographs the “The Carioca” and begins his association with Fred Astaire whom he considers an artistic soul mate.
