This chapter describes the liturgical edition of a mass for Santiago published by Arbishop Lorenzana of Mexico (later Archbishop of Toledo) in 1770. The chapter compares the crude reproduction of Visigothic neumes in this edition to the much more accurate copies made by Palomares, one of which was published in Burriel’s paleography treatise of 1755, and notes that Lorenzana was a canon of Toledo Cathedral in 1754, when Burriel was completing his work there for the Commission on the Archives. The chapter concludes by noting the divergent fates of Burriel’s unpublished research and Lorenzana’s widely lauded but far less sophisticated contributions to the study of the Old Hispanic rite.
