In this chapter I begin by describing philosophy as it was when Plantinga entered the field in the late 1950s. I then trace his work as it has developed over the years, and show the profound influence it has had on many of the subfields of philosophy. I suggest that the most important and persistent theme in his work is his multifacetted defense of the rationality of theistic belief.

Keywords: rationality of theistic belief; properly basic; evidentialism; foundationalism; proper functioning; warrant; problem of evil; possible worlds; Kant-rationality
