Northern Ireland is today a transformed society. Thirty-five years of a bloody terrorist war came to an end with the signing of the Good Friday peace agreement. Although some violence could have been expected for post-conflict Northern Ireland, no-one would have ever predicted the wave of terrorism currently sweeping the region. This chapter introduces the reader to “the dissidents” –the new wave of Irish Republican militants who have rejected recent peace treaties in favor of a return to violence. It traces the context to and development of the dissidents and introduces the groups, their tactics, and how they affect Northern Irish society today.
