This chapter introduces the research project that resulted in the databases that inform this project. Examining the 17-year period since the IRA ceasefire, this chapter presents the most systematic and comprehensive account of violent dissident activity in existence. This chapter examines the 1,244 violent dissident events, and analyzes the tactics and operations of the dissident groups. A special focus is on the increase in bombs and hoax devices. It examines the three major waves of dissident activity and charts the annual rise in frequency and lethality of the various factions.
