This chapter takes an insider look at the local and national strategies of violent dissident Republicans. Drawing on exclusive interview data and the policy documents of the groups themselves, this chapter examines the common aims and goals of the groups, while also distinguishing their core ideological differences. The chapter looks closely at the local, community based strategies the groups use to raise support (mostly from killing drug dealers and other ‘anti-social’ elements in an effort by the dissidents to assert power and authority in their communities). The chapter examines how the dissidents have a plan to disrupt the ongoing normalization of Northern Ireland.
