The Afterword compares the “Commonwealth” discourse of the mid-sixteenth century and its influence upon the writers of the 1590s to the discursive differentiation of “political economy” from politics in the mercantilist generation of the early seventeenth century. Landreth argues for the historical validity of pre-economic concepts of value in order to demonstrate that “economy” is a condition of capitalist modernity, not a transhistorical fact.
