As community musicians in the UK began to network, coordinate and debate, the International Society of Music Education’s (ISME) Commission for Community Music Activity (CMA) was in the process of being formed. As a meeting point that serves to link and nurture a growing international network of practitioners, Chapter 5 considers the CMA as a lens through which one can view global expressions of community music practice. Through an examination of its work and the parallel growth of community music education, training, and professional preparation, I suggest that the development of the International Journal of Community Music heralds the emergence of a scholarly field.
