This chapter begins laying the groundwork for an aesthetic theodicy by examining some common objections to including aesthetic criteria within the problem-of-evil discussion. It attempts to explain why the objections to aesthetic theodicy are so common by examining the traditional frameworks for theodicy and by showing why these frameworks resist including aesthetics. Then, leaning on the work of theodicist Eleonore Stump, this chapter offers a framework for theodicy that is friendly to the substantial inclusion of aesthetics.
